Starbucks Online Ordering Review

Screenshot - final view of online orderThe new online ordering service popped up in my recently updated Starbucks application (Android) and I had the time to try it out today. I’d been given the heads up by one of my friendly barista’s at my local store. He gave me a quick demo of his app, updated during a trip to California where it rolled out earlier. According to Digital Trends, the service rolled out across the US and is also now available on Android this week.

What can you expect? As Starbucks describes it on their website

Place an order and pay ahead on the Starbucks® app for iPhone® or Android™. That means you can walk in and without waiting in line, ask a barista for your freshly made order at the pickup area.

There are several steps, with a video available on the Starbucks site providing an outline. Unfortunately it must be the iPhone app, as it doesn’t look like my Android app.

My initial experience was good and bad. The bad was my order not being in the system at my local store (Florissant Missouri) They were working on a recent order but mine was missing. The good part of the experience is that they quickly made my drink and did not charge me.

Turns out it was user error.

The process requires a number of steps that I try to show via the screenshots below. Bottom line is check the bottom right corner and you’ll see an arrow indicating another step. My error was seeing my store reflected in the order summary along the bottom BUT I neglected the final arrow/step that confirmed the store.

The next time went very smoothly, placing the order while in my driveway and receding my freshly made beverage shortly after walking in while 8+ cars were in the drive through lane and a half dozen in store.

The potential downside is in subsequent visits I’ve seen multiple orders with six or more beverages in the order. What was a busy shop could get even busier. Good for Starbucks but something to be managed personally.
